Monica Cooley and Kala Nivedanam Dance Company present an original
Bharatnatyam dance drama entitled, "Subhaashitam: Parables from
India." This work explores universal values such as friendship,
honesty, thoughtfulness, respect and unity using stories and verses
from ancient Indian literature. The literary sources for this work
include Jataka Tales, the Panchatantra and the Thirukkural. These
universally appealing stories have been set to music and
choreographed by Monica's guru and renowned choreographer, Sri M.V.
Narasimhachari. This work is a collaboration between Kala Nivedanam
and the Global Education Center of Nashville and has been funded in
part by a grant from the Metro Nashville Arts Commission."
Monica Cooley is a respected performer, teacher and choreographer of
Bharatanatyam. She is a senior disciple of the renowned dancing
couple, Narasimhachari and Vasanthalakshmi of Chennai, India. An
American born in Singapore and raised in Indonesia, with an academic
background in South Asian Studies and over 25 years of training,
performing and teaching experience in Bharatanatyam.
