Sumita Chakravorty was initiated into Hindustani Classical Music by her father Sri Bireswar Datta, a disciple of Ustad Afzal Hussain Khan of Kanpur. Later, Sumita trained in the illustrious tradition of the Gwalior gharana with the eminent musician late Pt. Shankar Sripad Bodas in Kanpur, India. She trained further with Prof. P.K.Dixit and Prof. Chittaranjan Jyotishi at Benares Hindu University and late Pt. Shrikant Bakhre of Kolkata. She has given numerous successful performances in India and abroad including recitals at the Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata and the Kal Ke Kalakar Music Conference. She has to her credit a number of audio CD and cassette releases. For the last eight years, Sumita has combined the role of a teacher and a performing artist of Hindustani Classical Music in the Bay area with great success. In 1992, she was honored as a Master Teacher by Washington State Arts Commission. In 2004, the 'Suranjali' School of Music founded by her got affiliation from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in Pune, India. Sumita holds a Doctor of Music degree from Benares Hindu University.
