Dr. Trichy Sankaran is a world -renowned percussion virtuoso, and an award winning OCUFA scholar of Indian music. He has long been active as a top-flight performer, both within his Karnatak tradition, and in collaboration with noted ensembles in the New Music, World Music and Jazz fields. This includes performances with the famed NEXUS, luminaries such as Anthony Braxton, Charlie Haden, and others. He has also appeared in jugalbandhis (special combos) with top ranking tabla players such as Pandit Shanta Prasad, Zakir Hussein, Swapan Chowdhry, Anindo Chatterjie, and others. He has given numerous solo recitals on mrdangam and kanjira throughout North America and abroad and is the foremost among mrdangam players who has elevated the drum to the rare status of a solo instrument. As a composer, he has produced works for contemporary gamelan, South Indian dance, and African-American percussion ensembles. He has received numerous honours and awards from various Karnatak music associations in India and North America. He is Professor of Music and Director of Indian Music Studies at York University, Toronto, Canada where he has been teaching for more than three decades.
